Rep. Mike Alberts Supports Struggling Dairy Farmers

by: admin Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

State Rep. Mike Alberts, R-50th District, Brooklyn, Eastford, Hampton, Pomfret, Woodstock, urged the legislature to help Connecticut dairy farmers who are struggling just to break even in a uniquely challenging low-price market.

“The dairy industry has coped in the past with volatility in the prices they receive for their products,” said Rep. Alberts, “but the current situation is that prices barely cover the cost of feed for the cows. The state’s few remaining dairy farmers are struggling to survive.”

Rep. Alberts met with various dairy farmers who had traveled to Hartford to speak before the legislature’s Environment Committee.

“Once the farms are gone, Connecticut cannot replace them,” said Rep. Alberts.

Rep. Alberts said the dangerous trends for Connecticut are that dairy production is shifting to larger farms, small dairy farms are going out of business and many farmers expect to retire soon.

State Rep. Mike Alberts serves the 50th Assembly District that includes the towns of Brooklyn, Eastford, Hampton, Pomfret and Woodstock in the state House of Representatives.

Timothy D. Young Said:

Mike I just wanted to be on record asking for your support for SB-891. You have always strongly supported Agriculture and the Ct. Dairy Farmers and I want to thank you for that. These are tough times for all and we should all share the burden. However once farms are gone there gone. There bail-out money will come from housing and that will never be reversed or reimbursed. Thank So Much Tim.
